Leeds United go with everything to appoint Marcelo Gallardo as manager news drops

Leeds United are set to go with “everything” to try and lure former River Plate manager Marcelo Gallardo to Elland Road, with an answer expected within days, according to Argentinian journalist Bian Soifer.

The Whites have been dealt several blows in their search for Jesse Marsch’s successor, with both Carlos Corberan and Andoni Iraola turning down approaches to take up the vacant managerial position.

The Athletic’s Phil Hay (8 February) revealed that sporting director Victor Orta is an admirer of the former Argentinian international, who is currently out of work after leaving River Plate as manager.

Taking to Twitter on Thursday (9 February), the BOLAVIP journalist wrote: “Leeds goes with everything for Marcelo Gallardo.

“The doll is emerging as the main candidate to become DT of the team. There was dialogue and in the next few days his response will be known.

“In addition, Sevilla and Valencia follow him closely.”

Leading candidate?

With Leeds desperately needing a quick appointment and the rest of their managerial candidates currently in jobs, Gallardo could well be the best option for the club to pursue.

Having been out of work after being in charge of River Plate for eight years, a change to the Premier League could be the next step in his career, and it isn’t surprising to see Orta targeting the Argentinian.

Arne Slot of Feyenoord seems to be a far-fetched option considering his side currently leads the Eredivisie, and he would be unlikely to leave the club mid-way through the campaign. The only reported option left for the Whites seems to be Gallardo, and he must now be viewed as the number one target.

Whatever happens, Orta and Andrea Radrizzani need to get a replacement in as soon as possible because teams around them in the Premier League are continuing to pick up results at a rapid rate.

The likes of Everton, West Ham and Nottingham Forest have all returned to form recently, and Leeds desperately need a new manager in place to produce a bounce of their own.
