Report: Leeds set for major promotion boost as FIFA to deliver huge 19/20 update within 48 hours

Leeds United got a significant boost to their promotion hopes on Monday when it was reported that FIFA are set to announce an indefinite extension to the 19/20 season around the world.

It was reported in the Athletic that would give each governing body the ability to determine when campaigns would finish.

The report also claims that this “significantly reduces” the chances of leagues being cancelled – which is also great news for Leeds.

It also says that the next battleground will be on whether to resume the season with fans or behind closed doors. This ruling from FIFA gives governing bodies the ultimate flexibility.

FIFA are also set to change the dates of the summer transfer window and “permit contract extensions for players whose deals run out on June 30”.

This is a massive statement from FIFA that sets in place a global plan for football and is great news for Leeds.

The mood everywhere in the game is to finish the 19/20 campaign and this now gives an unlimited time frame for this to happen.

It also increases the chances of football resuming with fans, although we still think the most likely option is to play behind closed doors.

It means that the Premier League, the EFL, UEFA and FIFA are all united in finishing the 19/20 season and that’s important not just for Leeds but for the integrity of football.

Leeds fans will obviously still be concerned and will remain so until football actually resumes but this is a huge step in the right direction.
