Leeds United: Gary Lineker shares ‘horribly tight’ title verdict in new Leicester City admission

Leicester City have reached “squeaky bum time” after Leeds United moved within three points of Enzo Maresca’s Foxes, according to Gary Lineker.

Daniel Farke’s side were the only side in the Championship’s top three to claim all three points last weekend, as they ran out 2-0 winners over Sheffield Wednesday thanks to goals from Patrick Bamford and Wilfried Gnonto.

While Leicester still sit in pole position, Lineker has admitted that things are getting “horribly tight” at the top, before Micah Richards fired a new jibe at the BBC presenter on behalf of the Whites’ fanbase.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football Podcast (11 March, 42:45) he said: “Have you seen how horribly tight it’s getting in the Championship? Only won one of their last five Leicester, squeaky, squeaky bum time. Why is it in football nothing is ever easy in football?

“Leicester 82 points, Leeds 79, Ipswich 78, Southampton not too far behind that as well. Ipswich had a bit of a shocker as well.”

Micah Richards replied with a rendition of marching on together before saying: “Three points in it, problems. We’re marching on Gaz! Born and bred in Leeds.”

Can Leeds United upset Gary Lineker and beat Leicester City to the Premier League?

In the race for promotion this season, Leeds United are the Championship’s form team at this moment in time having not lost a league match in 2024, while also remaining unbeaten at Elland Road since Farke arrived.

Leicester may sit top of the table at this moment in time, but Maresca’s side are enjoying more than a little wobble at the moment having only won one of their last five league matches home and away, that win coming against a struggling Sunderland side.

Ipswich had been on an excellent run of form themselves, but their defeat away to Cardiff City had been coming as they repeatedly managed to come from behind to claim all three points. Kieran McKenna’s side were due a late defeat.

Whether or not Farke’s side will have enough to lift the title at the end of the season remains to be seen, but they are certainly in an excellent place to come out of the “squeaky bum time” in a better position than the other teams around them.
