Leeds United: Gary Lineker makes ‘terrified’ Leicester City admission in new title verdict

Gary Lineker has admitted he’s “terrified” that Leicester City won’t win promotion to the Premier League this season, having lost top spot to Leeds United.

Daniel Farke’s side moved above the Foxes with a 2-0 win over Millwall at Elland Road on Sunday (17 March) thanks to Wilfried Gnonto’s excellent first-half strike and Dan James’ close-range effort in the second half.

While Leicester have a game in hand over the Whites where they can reclaim their place at the top of the table, Lineker is worried the Foxes may miss out on the top two having been knocked out of the FA Cup by Chelsea.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football (18 March, 19:50) he said: “It’s the hope that kills you. You just think something has to happen at some point. Actually, Leicester have lost top spot now in the league because Leeds beat Millwall.

“I said before the game, I’d take an FA Cup win and not promotion, a trophy over getting back into the Premier League because next year we’d win a load more games. Now I’m terrified we’ll get neither.”

Will Leeds United beat Leicester City to promotion to the Premier League this season?

For so much of the season, it had looked as though this was going to be one of the most boring Championship title races in recent years, but in the first few months of 2024, the entire league has been turned on its head.

Leeds United have been unbeatable under Daniel Farke at Elland Road and it has almost become expected that the Whites will win every single week, especially at home in the Championship.

While Farke’s side have been improving week in and week out, Leicester have been in a bit of a wobble in recent weeks. The Foxes still have the quality to win promotion and potentially the title, but they’re not in form at all.

This race will go right down to the wire, but Leeds have the momentum behind them and the psychological boost of sitting on top of the table for the next two weeks. Hopefully, Farke’s side will make it count.
