Leeds United forward Ian Poveda faces injury setback after impressive start to loan spell

Disappointing news emerged today as Leeds United loanee Ian Poveda suffered an injury setback ahead of Blackpool’s game on Wednesday evening, according to The Gazette.

The 22-year-old has impressed since joining the Tangerines on loan during the final week of the transfer window, making a cameo appearance against Blackburn Rovers and earning a starting spot away to Huddersfield Town.

Blackpool boss Michael Appleton admitted Poveda is “durable enough to come in” but doesn’t want to rush the Leeds youngster back into action.

Speaking to The Gazette, Appleton explained how going from having little game at Leeds to starting a competitive first-team fixture may have affected Poveda’s injury.

“Obviously with him getting 75 minutes or so against Huddersfield that was a big statement from his point of view that he’s durable enough to come in and do that, since then we’ve had some really good training sessions and some of them have been very competitive and intense at times.

“I think he’s gone from not doing too much work at Leeds, almost finding himself in one of those in-between situations with the first team and Under-23s.

“I think he’s clever enough and the staff are clever enough to try and manage him over the coming weeks and hopefully get him through potentially the next two games knowing we’ve got a bit of a breather after Millwall.”

Bright background plagued by injuries

Poveda’s resume is classy, to say the least, and a solid loan spell in the Championship will only do Leeds favours heading into future seasons.

His accomplished youth career highlights he definitely has what it takes to play at the highest level; the former England international of Columbian descent enjoyed spells with Manchester City, Arsenal, Barcelona and Chelsea.

However, it seems the 22-year-old’s biggest problem is keeping fully fit, something he’ll have to prove he can do before bustling his way into Jesse Marsch’s squad.

After signing a four-year contract with Leeds in 2020, Poveda failed to have a successful stint in the U21’s setup and subsequently joined Blackburn Rovers on loan.

The forward had a bright start to life in Lancashire, scoring a goal and providing 1 assist against Sheffield United in 2021. [Transfermarkt].

The winger then suffered another injury setback which meant he spent five months on the sidelines; a potentially worrying theme for the Whites.

Let’s hope Poveda can get back on track at Blackpool, Micahel Appleton is a fantastic coach and is renowned for giving the youth in his squads the chance to flourish; we have our fingers crossed on this one.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites have reached an agreement to sign a left-back, according to his agent.
