Leeds United flurry on cards in January, triple transfer mooted

A potential Elland Road exit for Charlie Cresswell could trigger a “flurry of essential business” during the January transfer window for Leeds United, according to Beren Cross.

The journalist reported via Leeds Live [17 January] that, with multiple bids coming in for the young defender, the Whites could be forced into a trio of signings before the transfer window closes.

A natural centre-back, happy with an understudy role on the bench, could be vital ahead of a tough second half to the Championship season, as well as one or two full-backs.

It is understood that Millwall, among other clubs, have made a formal bid for Cresswell amid frustrations at his lack of game time at Elland Road, especially after Farke travelled to Cardiff with one true centre-back without him.

Lacking depth

After the loan departure of Luke Ayling, and injuries to Pascal Struijk and Liam Cooper, Leeds are extremely light in defence, which should be a cause for concern for Farke.

Although Ethan Ampadu is more than capable of deputising at centre-back, the absence of his talent and calmness in midfield is blatantly obvious when filling in alongside Joe Rodon.

If Leeds are to win promotion back to the Premier League, they must bring players before the transfer window shuts, whether on permanent deals or loans. Cresswell would represent an easy fix without the need for an additional centre-back but Farke has made his stance on the 21-year-old very clear.

It would be a shame to see the academy graduate leave indefinitely, proving to be an extremely talented defender after his season-long loan at Millwall last campaign. But this outcome looks more likely with more clubs being linked with his signing.
