Leeds United fans unerring 'defiance' praised by Athletic's Phil Hay

Leeds United correspondent Phil Hay paid credit to the Elland Road faithful for their “raucous ovation” after their side’s 4-0 home defeat to Manchester City.

Much has gone wrong for the Yorkshire side this season, with the humbling by Pep Guardiola’s side dragging them further into the relegation scrap.

Yet, despite the endless challenges they have faced this season, the home crowd were unerring in the backing, something that was highlighted by Leeds Correspondent Hay.

Writing for the Athletic, Hay said: “More than anything there was a defiance in circumstances which could tempt a stadium to throw in the towel.

“In Leeds, they seem to appreciate what fighting among themselves will do and the consequences of that are so obvious that on Saturday evening, a raucous ovation was the squad’s reward for a 4-0 home loss.”

Bad weekend for the Whites

This was a far from the ideal weekend for Jesse Marsch’s men.

Their tussle with City on Saturday evening was the start of a season-defining run of fixtures, with Chelsea and Arsenal to come.

Even the most positive of Leeds fans would probably accept that beating Manchester City was unlikely, but their predictable defeat was made worse by Burnley’s performance at Watford.

The Claret’s continued their recent good form with two late goals at Vicarage Road to give their survival hopes a significant boost.

The Lancashire side have moved level on points with Leeds and crucially have a far superior goal difference.

Crucially Burnley’s fixtures look favourable compared to the Whites, with the Clarets facing Aston Villa twice along with a home game against Newcastle.

The defeat to title-chasing Manchester City was expected but unfortunately for Marsch’s men, the upcoming matches against some of the best sides in the Premier League will determine their fate.

A defiant Elland Road for home games against Chelsea and Brighton could make all the difference.

In other Leeds United news, one Whites star has highlighted the key thing Jesse Marsch didn’t do when he arrived that has helped so much.
