Leeds United fans slammed as Daniel Farke makes ‘ridiculous’ Brenden Aaronson mess worse

Daniel Farke has been accused of making the situation worse after defending Brenden Aaronson against abuse from some Leeds United fans.

The Whites boss’ sustained use of the American in his starting XIs has been a point of contention this term, and came to a head in the wake of Leeds’ 2-1 home loss to Aston Villa on Sunday.

The club is now inside the bottom three, and with Willy Gnonto and Dan James both now fit supporters want them selected instead.

Farke, who is facing sack calls at Elland Road, then came out to publicly back Aaronson against critics online or in the stands with comments following the game, while admitting he can “annoy” because of his “hectic” style.

Martin Keown blasts Leeds fans as Simon Jordan questions Farke

However, in a debate about the situation at Elland Road live on talkSPORT former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan and ex-Arsenal defender Martin Keown both doubted the negativity around Aaronson will do anything to aid Leeds‘ predicament.

Jordan claimed the manager deciding to address the criticism directly will only have the adverse effect of encouraging it, saying: “I don’t think it helps Daniel Farke drawing even more attention to it because you know there’s a section of the fanbase that are just going to continue to do it now as a result of Daniel Farke’s intervention.”

Keown then went on to blame that section of supporters for damaging the side. He said: “What you don’t to do is shoot yourself in the foot and your own fans joining in and having a go at your own players.”

Jordan asked: “Was the manager wise to come out and to highlight it? If he wants to do it to the benefit of the player he can do that to the player and remind him how much support he’s got, and do that without dragging it into the public domain.”

“He was probably asked. Also, they’re bringing it up, the press, because they can hear it and it’s not great,” Keown responded. “Leeds fans now, if that’s your son out on that pitch, really? Pack it in and get behind your team, I think it’s ridiculous.”

Aaronson forever tied to previous era

Aaronson has always been a divisive figure on the pitch, with his former propensity to go to ground developing a reputation for not being physical enough for English football.

Despite his obvious qualities the issue these days tends to be more a lack of final ball or finish, but his ties to the end of the Andrea Radrizzani and Victor Orta era will always work against him.

The vast majority of the haul brought in under Jesse Marsch ahead of Leeds’ dreadful final season in the Premier League under the former regime are now gone, with only Gnonto still present otherwise and Max Wober out on loan again.

The likes of Luis Sinisterra and Tyler Adams departed under a cloud, while only now-Brighton man Georginio Rutter won over fans with his heroics in the first year back in the second tier before leaving.

Aaronson has never been a star in this team to the same degree, and his loan exit after relegation was always going to be hard to come back from, even if Gnonto’s reintegration from his own flirtations with a move to Everton prove it’s not impossible.

It is likely true that little good will come from fan ire directed at him, or Farke’s commitment to him given the manager’s shaky status at Elland Road, and on balance Aaronson probably needs a new start elsewhere.
