Leeds United fans sent warning to players with what they did after Southampton loss – Phil Hay
Leeds United fans sent the players a warning message after the 2-1 defeat to Southampton at Elland Road with their reaction, according to Phil Hay.
Speaking on The Square Ball podcast (6 May), The Athletic journalist believes the fans raucous ovation after the game was both a sign of appreciation and also a warning to the players.
Leeds will face Norwich in the playoffs semi-final, with a final against either Southampton or West Brom awaiting the winner at Wembley for a place in the Premier League, and Hay believes the fans were telling the players that the race isn’t over yet and sent a rocket their way with their reaction.
“The crowd was trying to wind them up in a positive way,” he said. “I think there are two aspects.
“One was that I do think genuinely, that people just wanted to show their appreciation for the fact that they have performed really well for most of the season.
“But the other was it felt like a bit of a rocket up the ass. This isn’t actually done yet, wakey, wakey, the playoffs are coming and what we’ve seen today was flat and asleep.
“Everybody needs to redouble their efforts and get it together.”
Leeds United fans are behind the players and Daniel Farke
After defeat to QPR and Southampton in the last two games, a lot of people are of the opinion that Leeds threw promotion away at the end of the season.
But Farke doesn’t believe that to be the case, and the playoffs are still there to be played and won so promotion isn’t even off the table.
This team were able to defeat Norwich both home and away during the regular Championship season and while the form right now isn’t the best, the squad is more than capable of putting together performances that can blow the opponents away.

Farke knows that and importantly the fans know that. The reaction at Elland Road after the Southampton game was one of encouragement and unity rather than backlash.
The players should know everyone is behind them, and if they play to their abilities then there is nobody who can stop them being a Premier League side next season.
