Leeds United were rocked by news of the first serious injury of the season after centre-back Robin Koch was ruled out until the spring following knee surgery.

The bad news came out of Leeds on Tuesday and it means that Diego Llorente has a big chance for a run in the first team, starting on Friday against West Ham.

Koch had picked up a problem in his very first game for Leeds against Liverpool and it finally became serious enough for surgery in a collision against Chelsea on Saturday.

Leeds fans are gutted by the news but some have said that the big move for Llorente that followed Koch arriving makes sense now.

However, we think that his injury could force Leeds to bring another centre-back or holding midfielder to the club in January. Koch’s injury leaves them thin at the back and with no real cover for Kalvin Phillips.

Others have bemoaned the fact that Koch was allowed out on international duty for Germany if he was holding an injury.

However, if he’s fit enough to play for Leeds it’s not in their power to stop him from being selected for his country.

Some fans think that he’s effectively done for the season but Koch has his eyes on the Euro finals next summer and is looking to return for both Leeds and Germany in March.

One fan summed up the situation well when he said, “Real blow, by some distance our best centre back. But to have a current Spanish international to step in is non too shabby!”

Llorente should get his first start on Friday night and Leeds are fortunate that he’s returned from injury just in time to step up.

In the meantime, here is a selection of reactions to the terrible news that emerged from Leeds on Tuesday…
