Leeds United fans jeer Middlesbrough supporters after what they did at Riverside

Leeds United put themselves back at the top of the Championship after a dramatic win against Middlesbrough.

Daniel Farke’s men have undergone a tough period lately, but they got their season back on track with a hard-fought 1-0 win at the Riverside.

Dan James’ second-minute goal was enough to split the two teams in the moment, but it was a game that caused serious frustration for Leeds’ staff and supporters.

Leeds should have had a far more comfortable evening given they had the ball in the back of the net on two other occasions during the game, with Patrick Bamford and Ao Tanaka getting on the scoresheet.

Despite both goals looking perfectly acceptable when reviewed with the benefit of television cameras, in the moment, they were both ruled offside.

It led to a far tenser game than Leeds had been hoping for, but their ability to hang on and grind out the result was massive for their promotion push.

Leeds fans were vocal in their support

Leeds fans are notorious for backing their team vocally, and this midweek trip to the Riverside was no different even before a ball was kicked.

As per Leeds Live in their unseen moments article (9 April), Middlesbrough fans attempted to distract the Leeds players during their warm-up by banging drums and making as much noise as possible, which led to “We’re Leeds United, we don’t need a drum” chants from the away fans.

Middlesbrough fans are said to have reacted by banging the drum harder, which led to jeers and whistles from the away end.

The supporters were left frustrated by the offside decisions that were made throughout the game, which Leeds might push as an issue beyond the match, but the result gave them plenty to smile about for the journey home.

Leeds are looking to finish the season in style

It has been a tough period for the Whites lately, having only won once in their previous six games prior to facing Middlesbrough.

That period led to Sheffield United and Burnley overtaking them in the league table, casting worries among Leeds fans that they would have to try and earn promotion via the playoffs.

The Whites attempted that last season and were defeated in the final at Wembley Stadium, which is why they are now focused on earning as many points as possible from their remaining five matches in a bid to earn automatic promotion.
