Leeds United ‘extremely unlikely’ to sign Nadiem Amiri, he ‘came close’ to Elland Road summer move

Leeds United are “extremely unlikely” to be the next destination of Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Nadiem Amiri, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post’s Joe Donnohue.

The attacking midfielder, who has five Germany caps to his name, “came close” to a summer move to the Elland Road club, Donnohue added.

But the 27-year-old remained with the German club due to a breakdown in negotiations, and has made four Bundesliga appearances this season.

“Nadiem Amiri came close to signing for United during the summer transfer window but a breakdown in negotiations left the German international midfielder arranging his own transport back to German Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen,” Donnohue wrote for the Yorkshire Evening Post.

“Amiri’s contract in Germany expires next summer and it is highly likely a move – temporary or otherwise – will be sought in January when the transfer window reopens.

“Leeds is extremely unlikely to be the playmaker’s destination, though, after the previous breakdown in talks, relating to the player’s wage demands.”

Not looking back

Leeds may have missed out on the signature of Amiri in the summer, having seemingly tried to bring him to Elland Road.

Plenty of new players were needed in West Yorkshire amid the lengthy list of senior exits following the club’s relegation from the Premier League.

But new manager Daniel Farke did a great job in his first and only Leeds transfer window so far, with talented players such as Ethan Ampadu, Glen Kamara and Joe Rodon coming in.

It remains to be seen what the future holds for Bayer Leverkusen man Amiri, although it does seem that a January exit from the Bundesliga club is likely given his lack of game time so far this season.

Farke will more than likely want to strengthen his side given the lengthy Championship campaign, with injuries and fatigue certain to have a major say in whether or not Leeds gain immediate promotion back to the Premier League.

In other Leeds United news, a January transfer is already on the cards for the Whites as scouts watch a brand new midfielder.
