Leeds United embroiled in new FFP rule breach row amid Leicester City development

Leeds United could be set to enter a brand new FFP rule breach row after it emerged Leicester City could face punishment for a double breach, according to The Sun.

Writing on their website (4 March), the news outlet report that there are frustrations growing at rival clubs as it is unclear as to who should take responsibility over potential breaches for Leicester following their relegation to the Championship last season.

The EFL and Premier League have different rules but with the Foxes bouncing between the divisions, they may escape punishment this season for any potential breaches – leaving Leeds chasing potential cheaters once again after their issues with Everton last season.

“Leicester are facing questions from rivals about two potential breaches of financial rules,” they wrote.

“Clubs in both the Premier League and Championship suspect the Foxes broke the top flight’s £105million limit on losses for the three years that ended last term (an average of £35m per Prem season).

“They also believe Leicester will exceed the £83m of combined losses they can make over the three years ending with the current campaign, with the EFL allowing only £13m losses per season.

“There is growing frustration that it remains unclear which league is responsible for checking a club’s finances for the season when they are relegated from, or promoted to, the top flight.”

Leeds United: Here we go again

There is some speculation in the article that Leeds United could be in a similar situation when it comes to their FFP accounts, but that seems unlikely considering the transfer window the club had in the summer.

Money was spent but there was so much saved on wages with players leaving on loan that it would be a huge shock if the club failed to balance the books adequately.

But Leicester weren’t quite in the same position and if there are suggestions that they have breached, then that means punishment should come this season like it has for Everton and Nottingham Forest.

Ultimately automatic promotion is the goal and whether that comes from finishing first or second is of little difference, but winning the title would be huge for such a young squad and there would be a financial benefit to it also.

It’s a shame that this loophole hasn’t been closed previously and that once again it’s Leeds who look likely to be on the wrong end of it.
