Dutch youngster Eros Maddy reveals transfer talks with Leeds United

Helmond Sport forward Eros Maddy, a product of the renowned Ajax youth academy has revealed that he nearly joined Leeds United after holding talks with the club.

Maddy, who made the switch from FC Utrecht to Helmond Sport last summer is still at the start of his career and was obviously on the Whites’ radar at one point.

The pacey forward confessed that before making the switch to FC Utrecht in 2019 from Ajax he “held talks” with Leeds United over a possible move to England, which is still his career dream.

“In 2019, I made the switch to FC Utrecht, but I had also held talks with Leeds United at the time,” he told Voetbal Zone.

“Although I don’t know exactly how concrete they were. However, my feeling at FC Utrecht was good right away.

“The fact that it was close to home was also nice. Hence my choice fell on that at the time.”

Maddy background.

The 21-year-old forward represented Ajax at numerous youth levels including their U17s, U19s and U21s sides but failed to make a dint on their first team.

He joined Utrecht’s U21s on a free transfer in 2019, evidently opting for a move closer to home rather than an international switch to Elland Road.

He now plays his football at Helmond Sport after joining them on a free transfer in July this year after making 50 appearances for FC Utrecht’s U21s and two appearances for their first team.

They play their football in the Keuken Kampionen Divisie, the second-highest level of football in the Netherlands, similar to the English Championship.

It seems Leeds may have got lucky on this one, despite the forward only being at the start of his career, he’s failed to make an impression on any of the top teams in his country’s squads.

With Ajax and FC Utrecht both passing up on Maddy, it’s likely he wouldn’t have been able to make the cut at Leeds United either.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites are now scouting an attacker at the World Cup and a January move appears to be on the cards for them.
