Leeds United: Don Goodman reacts to ‘really soft’ Ethan Ampadu incident v Watford live on Sky
Don Goodman said it would have been really soft had a penalty been awarded against Ethan Ampadu for a challenge on Yaser Asprilla during Watford versus Leeds United on Friday (29 March).
Wales international Ampadu, 23, appeared to get in front of 20-year-old midfielder Asprilla who went down pretty easily in the area during the first half of the Championship fixture at Vicarage Road.
Referee David Webb was unimpressed and Goodman – speaking on co-commentary for Sky Sports Main Event (29 March) – was not buying it either.
“He looked like he got there first but his touch maybe wasn’t what he wanted it to be, he gets his foot in there, it’s almost like they get together at the same time,” he said.
“I mean it would have been really, really soft I have to say. There is that little bit of a stand on the foot by Ampadu but he’s alright enough to look at the referee to see whether or not a penalty is given, I don’t understand it.
“I think it would have been soft I’ve got to be honest, I don’t think Watford would have liked it given against them, I mean there is a coming together but is it enough for a penalty? Not for me.”
Leeds went on to draw 2-2 as Mateo Joseph secured a late equaliser for Daniel Farke’s side.
Leeds United ace Ethan Ampadu involved in flashpoint v Watford
Never in a month of Sundays was this a penalty, Asprilla clearly went looking for it and thankfully the referee was buying absolutely none of it because some officials might have done on a different day.
It was an uncharacteristically out-of-sorts performance from Leeds but there was no way Ampadu should have been pinged for this one, he made enough contact on the ball to make sure a penalty should not have been awarded.

Goodman was similarly unimpressed on the commentary and you can see why, Asprilla went down far too cheaply and was almost pleading with his eyes at the referee to ask for a spot-kick to be given.
It can be frustrating as a supporter when those sort of moments go against your team, but thankfully on this occasion Leeds did not need to worry about that as common sense prevailed all around, which is not always a given in football.
