Alan Shearer calls out Leeds United over defending set pieces v Fulham

Match of the Day pundit Alan Shearer has called out Leeds United over their poor defending of set pieces against Fulham on Sunday afternoon.

Leeds United looked lacklustre yet again and more questions are being raised over Jesse Marsch’s leadership of the team moving forward.

Shearer admitted that Leeds aren’t doing the basics right and were “really poor” in the way they attempted to defend Fulham’s set pieces.

“When your not playing well, which they’re not, you have to do the basics right, particularly defending set pieces and they were really poor and got caught out,” says Shearer speaking on MOTD2 (23 September).

“You just look at Mitrovic and Ayling there, he’s too strong for him, he pushes him off and gets to the ball first.

“Another corner, watch how they go to sleep.

“The whole Leeds team goes to sleep and switches off, you cannot switch off at this level, any level.”

Times up.

How much longer can Leeds United persevere with Marsch and his stale tactics, time must be up for the American boss after Sunday’s defeat.

Marsch didn’t succeed in his last job in the Bundesliga with RB Leipzig and was always going to be a risk at Elland Road when he replaced Marcelo Bielsa.

His tactics and in-game management leave much to be desired and there is a serious problem brewing within the Whites setup if he manages to stay.

He completely flipped the lid in the Leicester game in an attempt to try something new, something which backfired completely.

There are plenty of issues at Leeds United right now, but Marsch is the main one, sacking him solves the majority of problems wrong at the club right now.

It’s become painful to watch Leeds at the moment and you go into every game expecting the worst, in a season that started so brightly things have gone very wrong.
