Leeds United defender sheds insight into his move to Elland Road

Pascal Struijk has opened up on his move from Ajax to Leeds United in January 2018.

Speaking to Voetbal International [01 December], the 22-year-old discussed many topics regarding his career and ambitions.

However, what will mainly interest Leeds fans is that others warned the defender that the move to England might have been too early.

Despite this, he has no regrets about his choice and seems very happy at Elland Road.

He said: “I was certainly not the best youth player at Ajax in those days. But the hidden potential was not seen either. The only thing is: what do you do about it?

“He has to show how much he wants it. That urge has grown a lot in me in recent years. I needed some help with that.

“Quite a few people had their doubts (about Leeds). Especially when I made the move to England so young, wasn’t that too quick? But everyone’s path is different.

“For me, this turned out to be the right one. I’m showing how things can also go if you’re not seen at Ajax.”

Great decision from Struijk.

After a rather slow start to life in England, Struijk has now made 48 senior appearances for the Whites.

39 of those have been in the Premier League, showing that the centre-back has become an important player for Marcelo Bielsa in the league [transfermarkt].

You can see why people around him might have had concerns because Ajax have a world-famous academy, and some fantastic players have come through that system.

So leaving at a young age and trying somewhere else was a brave move from Struijk, and it has definitely paid off.

The best thing that you can say about the defender is that he looks as if he has been playing Premier League football for a long time, and he looks totally comfortable at this level.

This is a great interview with Struijk, and we recommend any Leeds fan to give it a read and find out more about their young defender.

In other Leeds United news, a potential replacement for Marcelo Bielsa is ready to move to Elland Road.
