Leeds defender Robin Koch called up to Germany Euro squad
Leeds United summer signing Robin Koch has been named in Joachim Low’s Germany squad for the European Championships starting next month.
The German centre-back joined Leeds from SC Freiburg for a reported 12.9m fee last summer and after a relatively shaky start, has played an important role in guiding the Whites to a ninth-place finish in the Premier League.
Thus far, the 24-year-old has seven international caps to his name and will be looking to add to it in next summer’s competition.
However, it’s unlikely what Low’s preferred defensive partnership will be with the likes of Mats Hummels, Niklas Sule and Antonio Rudiger in the mix.
However, for Koch and Leeds fans alike, it will be a huge boost to see the German participating.
Great news
After enjoying a very good debut season with us, Koch has earned a deserved selection for the Euros. He’s also impressed former player Noel Whelan who’s called him ‘magnificent’. [Football Insider]
There were doubts given Low’s penchant for picking players he’s had experience of working with previously, but Koch’s performances in the Leeds United jersey have been enough to merit him with a spot in the team.
His ability to slot into central midfield could also have played a major role in Low’s selection.
Given Germany’s weakness in their full-back positions, Joshua Kimmich could be asked to play as a right-back which could see Koch slot into a defensive midfield position.
He’s proven to be a canny customer off the ball and a composed one on it. His passing ability has improved since he’s worked under Bielsa and Low could surprise a number of opponents if he deploys him correctly.
Although it’s very like;y Koch doesn’t heavily feature in the tournament, but we’re hoping he gets the minutes to justify his selection and prove himself to Low’s successor who’s expected to be Hansi Flick.
