Leeds United deeply studied by Bielsa before accepting the club's offer

Marcelo Bielsa has always been a deep-thinking, meticulous manager and that hasn’t changed while he’s been at Leeds United since 2018.

The 66-year-old had been out of work for three years when the Whites approached him to become their new boss but he still had a team ready to go to town on knowing whatever was needed before he accepted.

Bielsa’s former translator and coach Diego Flores spoke to The Athletic about the process they went through in researching Leeds United and their Championship opponents at the time while they were still in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

“We set to work. We would work from 8 am until 11 pm if needed. We put hundreds of hours into studying Leeds United,” Flores said.

“We’d look at how players reacted in one on ones when defending, we’d go deep into all their statistics. And then Marcelo would ask us to go deeper.

“By the time Victor Orta and Carlos Corberan came to see us in Buenos Aires, we could tell them everything about Leeds United.

“When they asked Marcelo what he knew about the Championship, he could tell them everything about the Championship and every team in it, the way they played and how Leeds played them.

“I remember myself doing Sheffield United, who would be a rival for us.”

Cannot stop

Being as precise and meticulous as Bielsa is a great trait to have, but it can come at a cost later down the line.

He hasn’t spent more than four years at any club side throughout his managerial career and that might be to do with his intense management style.

When you put as much effort in as he does from the start, you have to keep those levels right up there and maybe he suffers from burnout after a few years.

Not that you could blame him for that at his age but maybe he could elongate his career even further if he eased off a little.

Whatever his systems are, they’ve been working so far at Elland Road and long may it continue as the Whites continue to enthral the Premier League week in, week out.

In other Leeds United news, Bielsa has offered an update on this injury-laden Leeds star after the 3-3 draw against Aston Villa.
