Leeds United debut likely for Georginio Rutter v Accrington Stanley in FA Cup - Phil Hay

Jesse Marsch has admitted Georginio Rutter has a “high probability” of making his Leeds United debut against Accrington Stanley on Saturday (28 January), as relayed by Phil Hay.

The Whites take on the League One outfit in the fourth round of the FA Cup after dispatching Cardiff City in their third-round replay, and club-record signing Rutter could be set for his first start.

The 20-year-old is yet to feature under Marsch since his £35.5million move from Hoffenheim earlier this month, which will keep him in West Yorkshire until the summer of 2028. [Sky Sports, 15 January]

Reporting from Marsch’s press conference on Thursday (26 January), The Athletic’s Hay released details on Rutter’s chances of featuring on Saturday.

He Tweeted: “Marsch on Accrington: ‘We want to go to Accrington and make sure we go for the victory. We’ve got the chance to push in this tournament and we want to take it totally seriously.’

“Says there’s a ‘high probability’ that Rutter starts.”

Although the Whites looked bright in the final third during their goalless draw against Brentford in the Premier League, they lacked a clinical edge at the pivotal moment of every attack.

The Bees set up in a deep and narrow back-five, which Leeds failed to penetrate despite all their efforts, with the likes of Willy Gnonto and Jack Harrison trying to force passes when all they needed to do was recycle the ball and wait for the gaps to appear.

If Rutter can get off to a strong start and get his name on the scoresheet against Accrington, it could provide Marsch with a timely boost ahead of the trip to Nottingham Forest at the beginning of February (Sunday 5 February).

The League One outfit represents an ideal opportunity to start to blend in with Leeds’ other attackers in a not-so-heavily pressurised environment as a Premier League clash at Elland Road.
