Leeds United: David Prutton predicts winner-takes-all scenario amid ‘Unbelievable’ verdict

Leeds United could find themselves in a winner-takes-all scenario against Southampton in the final game of the Championship season, David Prutton has said.

The Whites hammered Swansea City 4-0 on Tuesday (13 February) to briefly leapfrog the Saints into second place after they were beaten by Bristol City.

Russell Martin’s men went back into the automatic spots by beating West Brom 2-0 on Friday (16 February), with Leeds having the chance to reply at Plymouth Argyle on Saturday (17 February) in the lunchtime kick-off.

Former Leeds midfielder and now Sky Sports presenter Prutton is excited by the battle for the top two and labelled how Daniel Farke’s side are playing this season as “unbelievable”.

“I’m chucking things very far ahead but, from a purely broadcasting point of view, it’s set up nicely for that final game of the season between Leeds United and Southampton at Elland Road. That could be an absolute winner takes all or buster,” Prutton wrote for the Yorkshire Evening Post (17 February).

“The three best teams are in the three top positions which I think is understandable. But they have all shown a fallibility at certain points and this week we saw Southampton beaten at Bristol City and Leeds doing their thing by winning at Swansea.

“Leeds are now doing all they can do which is take care of themselves and hope that someone else slips up. That’s what they have done and that’s what’s happened this week which got them into second but by the end of this weekend it could all be slightly different.

“Leeds have just got to keep up the unbelievable work that they are doing and I think that the squad is being used as a whole.”

David Prutton loving Leeds United and Southampton battle

From a neutral point of view, it must be absolutely enthralling watching the fight for promotion in the Championship this season – or at least the battle for second given Leicester City look a shoo-in to take one of the spots.

Prutton is rightly excited but as a supporter, it’s no good for the heart rate going through these battles. They are tense, they are nervy and they absolutely nail-biting.

Leeds United

Leeds have put together a fantastic run of form, winning seven straight matches to really leave themselves primed to pounce for second spot, even if Southampton have been absolutely unrelenting.

Whether it will go down to the absolute last day remains to be seen. Leeds supporters would love to have wrapped up a top-two spot before then of course. But if it did come to that what a spectacle we would have at Elland Road on 4 May. Let’s see how it all plays out.
