Leeds United gem Darko Gyabi's season is over after the midfielder underwent groin surgery during the March international break, according to Joe Donnohue.

The Yorkshire Evening Post journalist reported on Wednesday (27 March) that the 20-year-old has spent the second half of the season on loan with Plymouth Argyle has had his temporary switch cut short following his surgery.

Gyabi has returned to Thorp Arch and will not be able to play any further part in either the Whites' or Plymouth's Championship campaigns as he continues his rehabilitation back with Daniel Farke's side at Elland Road.

Will Pascal Struijk and Darko Gyabi play for Leeds United this season?

While Gyabi hasn't been around Farke's Leeds United squad for the second half of the season, it is a blow to see a young prospect's season end so prematurely, especially given his recent performances out on loan.

The 20-year-old couldn't get a sniff in the first half of the season but showed during his brief time at Home Park that he is more than capable of having an impact in the Championship, even if not yet at the top end of the table.

For this news to come so quickly after Farke confirmed Pascal Struijk's season is also over after the defender suffered a similar issue to Gyabi, it feels as though the Whites have been dealt a double blow in their bid for promotion.

Struijk's absence will be felt more immediately at Elland Road, but the good performances of Joe Rodon and Ethan Ampadu have ensured that the Whites are capable of succeeding without the Dutchman in recent months.

Hopefully, both players will make a full recovery and be able to make their stamp on Farke's squad again in pre-season. Until then, the Whites' entire focus has to be on finishing the season strongly to make an immediate return to the Premier League.
