Leeds United: Danny Rohl shares ‘on fire’ Ian Poveda transfer admission after loan switch

Ian Poveda was “on fire” to leave Leeds United and Elland Road to join Sheffield Wednesday during the January transfer window, according to Danny Rohl.

The 24-year-old barely featured for Daniel Farke’s side in the opening half of the season, making only seven appearances for the Whites in the Championship, all of which saw him introduced from the substitutes bench.

However, Poveda has impressed since arriving at Hillsborough with an assist in his first start against Birmingham City on Friday (9 February) and Owls boss Rohl had admitted he was surprised to see the attacking midfielder drop down the Championship.

As quoted by the Yorkshire Evening Post (10 February) he said: “When I come back to the first meeting with him and his eyes, when he speaks about football he is passionate. We spoke about what I can do for him and in which position I want to have him because I see his strength.

“He was immediately open-minded and was on fire to come here. I think this is not easy. For some players, it is not the easiest decision to come to the bottom of the league instead of playing with Leeds for promotion. But he was immediately convinced about this and gave me a really good feeling.”

Leeds United and Daniel Farke don’t need Ian Poveda

It shouldn’t come as a surprise to supporters that Poveda was desperate to leave Leeds United last month as it had become incredibly clear that Farke didn’t fancy the 24-year-old at Elland Road.

The German can’t be blamed for that decision given the plethora of attacking talent at his disposal, with the likes of Wilfried Gnonto and Crysencio Summerville proving to be among the best players in the Championship when fit and available.

By loaning Poveda out further down the Championship, the Whites have ensured that he is in the shop window so that he is able to find a new club on a permanent basis when his contract at Leeds expires at the end of the season.

Ultimately, it makes very little sense for the Whites to pay the entirety of his wages for the remainder of the season if he isn’t going to play. This loan switch appears to have been the ideal situation for all parties.
