Leeds United could ‘wow’ in summer with Todd Boehly-esque recruitment drive – Stan Collymore

Leeds United could “wow” fans in the summer transfer window should the 49ers Enterprises complete their takeover, similar to Todd Boehly’s recruitment at Chelsea, according to Stan Collymore.

The Whites enter the contest with Spurs on Sunday [28 May] knowing that their Premier League safety fate is out of their hands after they failed to take their chance against West Ham United last weekend.

Leeds currently sit second from bottom on 31 points, two points from safety and an Everton victory against Bournemouth on the final day would see them relegated to the Championship.

It remains to be seen what effect that may have on the 49ers plans for the club, but Collymore, writing in his column for the Sunday People [28 May, pages 60 & 61] believes fans will be watching to see if the American stakeholders undertake a similar recruitment drive to Boehly at Chelsea.

“If Leeds’ American stakeholders do indeed take control this summer then we’ll be watching to see if they try to have a ‘wow’ summer similar to Todd Boehly at Chelsea a year ago.”

Must be smart

Should the Whites suffer their damaging relegation fate on Sunday afternoon [28 May], plans will be swiftly made to ensure a swift return to the top flight for the 2024/25 campaign and much of that will involve recruitment.

It’s not just the potential of players coming in at Leeds United, but the key players who will be leaving Elland Road as a result of their position in the Championship.

It’s going to be such a huge and eventful summer at the club, with change being undertaken in all departments, most notably in the ownership territory, although there’s still some uncertainty as to what the 49ers will be thinking about a potential takeover should relegation occur.

While it’s okay to dream of a hefty and ambitious recruitment drive in the summer given the new owners and potential new funding, any kind of recruitment Leeds United undertake this summer must be smart and efficient.

It remains to be seen whether the Whites will have the same pull they enjoyed as a Premier League club, so they may have to exploit a totally different market if they are to strengthen a potentially depleted squad at Thorp Arch.

In other Leeds news, the agents of a pair of closely-linked Whites aces are thought to already be searching for moves ahead of possible relegation.
