Leeds United could make Lens defender Facundo Medina long-term Liam Cooper replacement

Leeds United are considering signing Lens defender Facundo Medina who will be available for a fee in the region of £30million, per AS Roma Live [12 March].

Being a left-footed centre-back, an argument can be made for the Whites viewing him as Liam Cooper’s long-term replacement as he’s currently 23.

Cooper is the club captain but it’s fair to say that he’s not been at his best for the last two seasons.

Leeds are a club that’s been plagued with injuries and due to that the Scotland international has probably gotten more game time than he would’ve otherwise.

If all Leeds players are fit, there’s a fair argument for him being the fourth or even if the fifth best centre-back at the club.

This means that it’s time for the club to part ways with him and if possible bring in someone younger who can fit the bill.

In Medina, they’ve got someone who’s 23 and has proven that he’s ready for the modern game and being a centre-back who can play out of defence.

He’s good with the ball at his feet and is equally good on the defensive of things – being a nightmare to play against.

Not only is he capable of playing as a centre-back, but he can also be deployed at left-back.

Given the different systems managers play with and without the ball, he could be a perfect fit on the left side of a back three as well.

If the left back, Junior Firpo or Max Wober, has pushed up, he can tuck in to fill in the void with the right-back then play as a centre-back, making it look like three without the ball.

He may be a tad expensive but the French club are assuming there’s a huge market for him.

The minute the suitors die down, it’s going to be ideal for Leeds to step in and try to sign him for around the £20million mark.
