Leeds United have opened talks with Dinamo Zagreb over defender Josko Gvardiol.
Fabrizio Romano reported late on Sunday evening that the Whites are planning a move for the 18-year-old who is rated around £17.8million.
Marcelo Bielsa is warming to the idea of another centre-back at Elland Road, with Liam Cooper and Robin Koch his only senior options as it stands.
In a further update, Gianluca di Marzio has reported that Leeds should find an agreement with Zagreb in the next week.
The Sky Sports journalist described Gvardiol as one of the “great hopes” of Croatian football in the years to come.
Di Marzio did back up previous reports that the agreement will be for a figure in-and-around £17.8million for the defender.
It would be a large chunk of money for a relatively untested player in terms of experience, but he has clearly made a name for himself in Zagreb.
Gvardiol featured in the Croatian club’s recent Champions League clash with CFR Cluj last week and has some impressive stats behind his name.
The 18-year-old seems to have all the attributes that Bielsa loves his defenders to have – the ability on the ball, a strong physical presence, and a reading of the game that allows them to be one step ahead of the opposition.
His 6.76 interceptions per 90 minutes according to WyScout are even better than Ben White – impressive to say the least.
Leeds would be picking up one of the brightest talents in Croatia looking at this report, and it could happen sooner rather than later.
