Leeds United: Conservative MP Johnny Mercer hits out after what he saw at Plymouth

Conservative politician Johnny Mercer has hit out at Leeds United for being “boring” after going to watch them beat Plymouth Argyle at Home Park on Saturday 17 February.

Wilfried Gnonto opened the scoring with his fourth goal in his last four Championship matches before Georginio Rutter finished the game off in the 2-0 win.

The fixture marked the fourth meeting between the two sides this campaign, with Leeds claiming the victory in three of them, albeit one of them being in extra-time in the FA Cup Fourth Round.

After Leeds fan Andy Cook asked him how the match went, Mercer replied via X on Saturday (17 February): “No idea. Leeds are so boring I struggled to stay awake. Think we won.”

Leeds United dominate in the Championship

Considering that Plymouth have been unable to defeat Daniel Farke’s side in four attempts this season, it is understandable that some rival fans are becoming frustrated with the Whites.

However, that is in no way Leeds’ problem, as they continue to push for Premier League promotion amid a battle for the automatic promotion spots with Leicester, Southampton and Ipswich Town.

Football fans are extremely reactionary, especially when it comes to defeats in the sport. This is definitely one of those cases because Leeds are one of the most entertaining sides in the division.

The attacking prowess of Crysencio Summerville, Rutter, Patrick Bamford, Joel Piroe, Dan James and Gnonto have all been a joy to watch this season, boasting the joint-third-highest number of goals scored in the Championship this season.

If you were to step back and look at the performance as a neutral, Mercer would be able to see just how lucky the Championship are to have Leeds play in it and showcase the dangers that they possess for a potential rise back to the Premier League.
