Leeds United defender Connor Roberts explains ‘joke’ appearance change ahead of Wales v Poland

Connor Roberts says he started growing his moustache as a joke but is now against shaving it off partly due to the form of Leeds United.

The Wales defender arrived at Elland Road with the now-trademark facial hair in the January transfer window on a short-term loan from Burnley.

Roberts has yet to lose a Championship game in Leeds colours, while that unbeaten streak goes back even further when accounting for his time in the league with Burnley.

Asked about his moustache at a Wales press conference, Roberts said [Sky Sports News, 24 March, 2:50pm]: “It’s a bit of a joke, to be honest.

“My wife asked why don’t I grow it, and then I went on an unbeaten run with Burnley. I’ve done the same this year [at Leeds] and keep asking her if I should shave it off, but she likes it so I’ll leave it there.

“I think it’s 25 Championship games without a loss, so hopefully that continues.”

Roberts has had to be patient for his chance to break into Daniel Farke’s starting line-up since arriving nearly three months ago.

Due to the form of Archie Gray at right-back and Junior Firpo on the opposite flank, the Welshman has mainly been used from the substitutes’ bench.

Indeed, just one of his eight league appearances has been a start, and that means a permanent deal in the summer looks unlikely.

Whenever he has been called upon, even if just for a few minutes at the end of a game, he has always put in a shift.

Roberts has impressed over a number of years for Swansea City and more recently Burnley, earning a place in the Championship Team of the Year last time out with the latter.

The 28-year-old is clearly a lucky omen, and long may that continue – even if it does come at the expense of his moustache getting out of hand.
