Leeds United complications revealed as Daniel Farke lauds Josuha Guilavogui

Daniel Farke has raved over Josuha Guilavogui ahead of the Leeds United v Bristol City clash at Ashton Gate on 26 October.

The Whites spoke to and considered a number of players and finalised the signing of the 34-year-old French midfielder on a free transfer.

He also fit into the wage structure and after a complicated process, he was announced as a new Whites player.

Farke said in his pre-match press conference, as quoted by LeedsLive: “A guy who understands his role and, for that, trained in the last few months on his own, in good shape. Totally convinced of overtaking this role, more like an emergency case. Open and honest about what we want to see.

“A mentor for the younger players. Helps to develop our younger players and provides cover if a younger player is not ready.

“This guy won’t crack under pressure. Unbelievable guy. Everyone who worked with him was full of praise. He was captain for every team he has played for. That says enough about his character.

“Pretty complicated. Not our plan to sign anyone in October. If we were interested in him, we would have done it in May or June. You have to be creative when we get these injuries. Our scouts prepare. Have to use your own network of key people because you need to be open to the best solution. First thing was the profile we needed.

“Checked physical conditions. Wanted someone here affordable. Speak to them about their role and what we expect. Research with former team-mates and managers. We checked a few candidates and options. Had the decision to get him.”

Josuha Guilavogui is an important signing for Leeds United

At 34, Guilavogui brings a wealth of experience from top leagues across Europe, which is invaluable for a squad like Leeds, especially in the Championship’s gruelling campaign.

The Frenchman’s role as a mentor to younger players, coupled with his ability to fill in for injured key players like Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev, provides stability and depth in the midfield.

His leadership qualities, evidenced by his captaincy in previous clubs, suggest he can also play a part in maintaining dressing room morale and discipline.

Furthermore, his tactical understanding and physical presence could be crucial in tight matches, where his composure under pressure might help in clinching vital points.

Guilavogui’s experience, leadership and tactical acumen ensure he remains an important asset for Leeds, both on and off the pitch, as they push for promotion.

While his impact on the pitch might reduce in 2025, he can still be an important presence off the field.
