Leeds United: ‘Completely Ridiculous’ Georginio Rutter made admission after 2-0 win v Millwall

Phil Hay believes it’s “completely ridiculous” that Georginio Rutter is now closing in on 20 assists for Leeds United this season.

Speaking on The Square Podcast on Monday (18 March), the Athletic journalist said the Whites had “slivers of class” that made the difference in their 2-0 victory over Millwall on Sunday (17 March).

He added that Daniel Farke’s side are becoming “very hard to compete with” for teams all across the division, with the 21-year-old Rutter setting up both goals against the Lions at Elland Road.

“Leeds just had those slivers of class that made the difference and that is why time after time managers like Neil Harris are sitting down and saying ‘we can’t realistically compete with or hope to beat this kind of team over and over again because they’re just far too good and it’s why Leeds are probably going up because they play like this’,” said Hay.

“They have guys like Gnonto who contributed little before Christmas but is now scoring at a healthy rate, guys like James who is now nearly up to 20 goals and assists combined, Rutter who is almost up to 20 assists alone, which is completely ridiculous.

“Just that element and that degree, which is very hard to compete with if you’re in mid-table or a club fighting relegation. It’s actually become difficult to compete with if you’re up at the top, too.”

Georginio Rutter on fire for Leeds United

It was yet another excellent performance from Rutter for Leeds against Millwall as he set up both of Willy Gnonto and Dan James’s goals, taking his assist tally to 18 for the season.

The French forward showed great skill to shrug off his man and lay the ball off for James to seal the points with just over 10 minutes left to play.

While it wasn’t a vintage performance in the first half from the Whites, they have the quality at their disposal to get the job done even when they’re not at their best.

The victory took Farke’s side to the top of the Championship table after Leicester City were in FA Cup action against Chelsea over the weekend.

The German boss will be looking for his players to maintain the consistency they have shown in this calendar year once they return from the international break in a couple of weeks.
