Leeds United close to finalising one of the biggest January transfers, Georginio Rutter bid out of nowhere

Hoffenheim’s management were not expecting a club-record bid from Leeds United for 20-year-old forward Georginio Rutter, according to L’Equipe.

SuedDeutsche suggest the Whites have agreed a five-year deal at Elland Road worth £17.6million, with a fee of £30million to £35million to be paid to the Bundesliga club.

L’Equipe now suggest (10 January) a deal is close to being agreed upon for one of the “biggest transfers” of the January window. Rutter’s move to Elland Road will dwarf the reported £10million fee the club paid for Max Wober at the start of the winter window (The Guardian’s Fabrizio Romano, personal Twitter, 1 January).

It’s believed the Bundesliga side were not anticipating Rutter to leave mid-way through the season with the French forward having signed a new deal in the summer of 2022.

Leeds are also close to signing Club Brugge goalkeeper Senne Lammens with HLN journalist Tomas Taecke suggesting (personal Twitter account, 8 January) claiming the 20-year-old is on his way to Elland Road.

This move seems to be edging closer to its completion and Jesse Marsch will be delighted to add to his forward options. Rodrigo has been excellent for the Whites this season but it was absolutely vital for the club to sign another striker.

Patrick Bamford has suffered from the same injury problems in the 2022/23 campaign and has looked like a shadow of himself when he has been given the chance to start. Rutter fits the mould of versatile forward the Leeds boss is after and he will be expected to hit the ground running when he does eventually complete his move to Elland Road.

There’s absolutely nowhere for Marsch to hide now when it comes to Leeds’ current form. Since his arrival at the club, he’s been backed heavily and has a side which is littered with players who he has brought to the club.

If results and performances continue to be inconsistent, the pressure will begin to rise on Marsch and serious questions will be asked about whether he is the right man to take the club forward.
