Leeds United ‘close’ to completing Weston McKennie deal, player says Juventus goodbyes
Weston McKennie has said goodbye to his Juventus teammates as he closes in on his move to Leeds United, according to journalist Manuel Veth.
Sky Sports journalist Gianluca Di Marzio revealed (personal website, 26 January) that the Yorkshire side’s increased offer of £26.3million plus bonuses should be enough to get a deal over the line ahead of the Tuesday deadline.
Veth, who is Transfermarkt’s North American area manager, has suggested the 24-year-old has already said his goodbyes and that a deal is close to being “done”.
“Sources suggest that Weston McKennie to Leeds United is now close to being done. The USMNT has already said goodbye to his Juventus teammates,” he wrote (via Twitter, 26 January).
Incredible
The signing of McKennie would be an incredible capture from the Premier League side – and yet more evidence that there’s plenty of ambition at Elland Road at the moment. He’s a top-quality player who has proven himself both on the international and European stage.
Jesse Marsch will be over the moon to get this deal completed. A midfielder was probably the one position he was prioritising heading into the latter stages of the window after the departure of Mateusz Klich earlier on in the month. McKennie knows Tyler Adams well and the prospect of them forming a midfield pair for Leeds is an exciting thought.

Signings like this are needed to take the Yorkshire side to the next level and at 24, there’s still a good chance McKennie will develop further during his time at Elland Road.
The pressure is now certainly on the Leeds boss to get a tune out of this expensively assembled squad and ensure that they aren’t dragged into a serious relegation scrap.
