Leeds United: Chris Sutton moots ‘hammer blow’ for Ipswich amid Championship title race

Chris Sutton has insisted Ipswich could be dealt a “hammer blow” in the title race with Leeds United and Leicester ahead of their clash with Norwich at Carrow Road.

With the current top three in the Championship separated by just two points, any slip-up could prove pivotal in the race for the title as well as automatic promotion.

The East Anglia derby will provide the first hazard for Ipswich in a game their opponents also need to win in their bid for the playoffs, leading Sutton to suggest the game could be enormous.

Speaking on the It’s All Kicking Off podcast, Sutton shared: “Top of the Championship with six games to go, that’s remarkable. You’ve got Ipswich top, they’re in one hell of a race with Leeds and Leicester with two points between the top three.

“Norwich are in sixth and anywhere down to Hull in tenth have a possibility of getting into that playoff place, so it’s enormous for both. It could be so decisive and it could be a hammer blow for whichever team doesn’t win.

“Norwich were really, really poor against Leicester. I just wonder how this game will pan out. It’s absolutely enormous and very difficult to call. Ipswich will fancy their chances.”

After dropping into second place, Leeds know they still have a fight on their hands if they want to win automatic promotion from the Championship, or perhaps even the title, given the standard set by their competition.

However, if Leicester do slip in their huge derby clash with Norwich, Daniel Farke’s side need to be prepared to take advantage, although a game against seventh-placed Coventry could provide a tough test of their own.

The weekend’s fixtures will see first play sixth and second play seventh in a potentially pivotal period for both the title race and the playoff race – which one of Leeds, Leicester and Ipswich will see themselves dragged into.
