Leeds United chief Victor Orta reveals what Andrea Radrizzani told him in private about World Cup ace Azzedine Ounahi
Leeds United director of football Victor Orta has revealed what Andrea Radrizzani told him in private about Angers midfielder Azzedine Ounahi.
The 22-year-old has been an integral part of Morocco’s run to the semi-final in the World Cup and Orta has claimed that Radrizzani has asked him about the midfielder.
Even Orta, who’s kept tabs on him for the last two years, admits that he’s been surprised by how he’s fared in Qatar.
He told Spanish outlet Marca, as transcribed by Yorkshire Evening Post, “How many messages have I received about him? Even my President has messaged me! ‘Where was this guy? We haven’t seen him!’ Even the President!
“He’s probably been the breakout player, can we say that? I’ve known him for two seasons, this year he’s at Angers, and I’ve been surprised by his physical level.
“He’s not been like that, I’m not saying he’s been lazy but I’m saying maybe the emotion is different, maybe he feels different playing in the Morocco shirt to the Angers one, where there’s a whole country behind you, your family.”
On the shortlist?
While we do not see Leeds making a move for him in January, he could be a player Orta puts on the shortlist for the near future.
For starters, Orta and Leeds do not tend to sign players on the back of tournament form as they prefer a long-drawn scouting process.
Secondly, they do not even need another midfielder and that’s why they will not be prioritising it this January.
The priority remains a new striker and left-back and maybe over the summer things can change if Mateusz Klich and Adam Forshaw are both no longer there.
Tyler Adams has also been linked with the exit door so we cannot really see how the future pans out and Leeds need to be prepared.
As neutrals, it’s been good to watch Ounahi at the World Cup and we’ll be keen on the game against France if he can do it against the best in the world.
