Leeds United captain Liam Cooper shares injury update as return nears

Leeds United are edging closer to having a squad of fully fit footballers for the first time in what seems forever as captain Liam Cooper returns to the grass.

The Scotsman went off injured during the Whites’ 2-2 draw against Brentford in December and his presence at the back has seen Leeds slip to 16th in the Premier League since.

His leadership was really missed throughout February as Leeds conceded 20 goals in five matches, ultimately culminating in the sacking of manager Marcelo Bielsa.

The 30-year-old though has shared that he is back on grass via his personal Twitter account as he steps up his rehabilitation in the hope of returning as soon as possible.

New boss Jesse Marsch could do with Cooper being back fit quickly too as he wishes to assess the current squad ahead of the summer transfer window.

Patrick Bamford also returned to training on the grass this week.

Crucial captain

The role of captain is the most important in any dressing room and that is no different at Elland Road.

Cooper has been the man with the armband for much of Bielsa’s time in Yorkshire and has stepped up to the plate on countless occasions to represent Leeds United like a true leader.

Taking that out of a team is always going to cause disruption but no one predicted just how much chaos would go on with other injuries compounding the problems.

Cooper seems to be in good spirits at least and his presence back in training will be sure to give the players a huge lift amid their relegation battle in the Premier League.

His return to the grass is one that will be guaranteed to put a big smile on supporters’ faces and the quicker he can get back to full fitness, the better.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites are in the race to sign this Dutch set-piece specialist from the EFL this summer.
