Leeds United break six-year Sky Sports record in 2-2 draw v Cardiff City

The match between Leeds United and Cardiff City on Sunday (6 August) broke a six-year Sky Sports record, according to the official English Football League (EFL) website.

The official EFL website reported on Tuesday (8 August) that it was the most-watched Championship fixture on Sky Sports since 2017, aside from the Play-Offs.

The Championship clash peaked at nearly one million viewers, while over 30,000 people went to Elland Road for the match, the EFL added.

“The fixture between Leeds United and Cardiff City was also the most-watched Championship fixture on Sky Sports – excluding Play-Offs – since 2017, with a peak audience of nearly a million viewers,” as per the official EFL website.

Huge club

The record-breaking figure from Sunday’s match proves just how big of a following Leeds have, even with their recent relegation from the Premier League into the Championship.

Of course many Cardiff fans were watching on, but it is fair to say that a large chunk of those tuning in were supporting the team in white.

They were, however, left frustrated at the final whistle, with the Whites managing to rescue a point at the very death thanks to Crysencio Summerville’s late equaliser.

It was a massive day for the new owners, new manager Daniel Farke and of course his new players Ethan Ampadu and Sam Byram, but it was not the return to the Championship that Leeds were looking for.

Cardiff didn’t exactly spoil the party given how they didn’t leave Elland Road with all three points, but the Bluebirds definitely put a dampener on an exciting afternoon in West Yorkshire.
