Leeds United: BBC pundit likens Archie Gray to Manchester City ace John Stones

David James has compared Leeds United midfielder Archie Gray to Manchester City’s John Stones after his recent under-21s bow.

Stones’ teammate, Rico Lewis, also drew comparisons with Gray as he can also feature as a right-back as well as a central midfielder.

Daniel Farke moved the 18-year-old to right-back after an injury crisis and now that’s become his spot to lose in the Leeds XI.

James, a BBC pundit, said on commentary, as Gray scored on his England under-21s debut: “Yeah, I mentioned Rico Lewis a few minutes earlier, so many players nowadays are playing in multiple positions.

“There was a time where if you could play in more than one position, you were considered a utility player and not specific for anything, and arguably lower down the pecking order.

“Whereas, as we’ve seen in the Premier League and in international football, if you’ve got that versatility, John Stones is probably the best example at the moment of a senior player.

“And Archie Gray is following that mould, as you said he’s been fantastic for Leeds this season, and hopefully for him, his future is in the senior England side playing in one of many different positions.”

Archie Gray has been tremendous for Leeds United

To be compared to Stones is an honour as he moved to Manchester City as what many perceived to be an overpriced signing from Everton and struggled initially.

A lot was made about his defensive abilities, but he’s quickly adapted to become the most versatile defender-cum-midfielder in football and arguably the best in Europe at doing what he does.

If Gray is to follow in his footsteps, he can be destined for the absolute top and one can understand why Liverpool are linked with him.

At just 18, he displayed composure, scoring minutes after coming on for his international under-21s debut.

His performance mirrors his consistency for Leeds, where he’s been a standout performer under Daniel Farke.

Gray’s ability to adapt to different positions and deliver under pressure bodes well for his future.

For Leeds fans, Gray represents the club’s promising youth and the potential for success.

With such a bright prospect in their ranks, excitement is warranted as Gray continues to excel and contribute to Leeds’ aspirations of returning to the Premier League.
