‘Not holding my breath’ – BBC pundit claims rarely-seen Leeds ace must improve during break
Noel Whelan has claimed that Leeds United forward Jean-Kevin Augustin must use this enforced break as a chance to return to full fitness.
The BBC pundit admitted that he isn’t holding his breath though, as the RB Leipzig loanee still hasn’t delivered at Elland Road since arriving at Elland Road.
Augustin hasn’t made a competitive start under Marcelo Bielsa and has only come off the bench three times in the Championship.
Whelan claimed it would be a bonus, but that he could be missing out on full-match fitness because you can’t earn that in training.
“I am not holding my breath on that,” he told Football Insider.
“Leeds are not sitting top of the league because of Augustin coming in in January. He has done nothing and if he gets fit it is a bonus but if he does not I am not sweating about it. We have got enough without him getting on the pitch again.
“It is important for him to get fit and important for the fans to know a bit more about what he is like – absolutely. But you only get fitter by playing games and we are not playing any!”
Whelan is right, Augustin needs to use this break effectively and use it as a chance to improve on what he has shown everyone since arriving.
The French forward has only completed 49 minutes and had three shots on goal. His best WhoScored match rating is only 6.05 – something which is way below par for a Marcelo Bielsa side which dominates every single game they play.
Whether it will be a boost or not, it is hard to tell. If Augustin came back fully fit after this enforced break and found the net five times in the last nine games, we would all label this as a great piece of business.
