Leeds United attacker trains with English club ahead of potential loan exit move

Luca Thomas has been training with York City ahead if a potential loan move from Leeds United, according to Joe Donnohue.

The Yorkshire Evening Post journalist reported via X on 16 October that the Under-21s forward has been with the National League side already, and they are keen to do a deal.

Thomas has been in excellent form for Scott Gardner’s side this term, scoring six and assisting one in five Premier League 2 appearances.

Luca Thomas had Leeds United senior preseason with Daniel Farke

If Thomas, 20, has already been training with York City then it certainly looks like a temporary move is imminent.

He likely won’t get much of a look in at Elland Road as it stands, despite being involved in preseason training with the first team under Daniel Farke, so senior experience elsewhere is obviously a priority even if it is well down the pyramid to start.

Mateo Joseph was already pushing for minutes in the senior side with more regularity by the same stage so the club likely need to speed up Thomas’ development if they have designs on him being a factor for the club moving forward.

Patrick Bamford’s fitness and form continues to fluctuate and it often feels like the time has come for him to move onto a new challenge, something he admitted he was in favour of two summers ago before changing his mind [EFL 72+, 9 October].

Joel Piroe should have a more certain future if Farke sees fit to use him as a striker rather than an ineffective number 10, and Joseph has shown flashes of developing into a quality senior player in his most extensive first-team action yet this term.

But the likes of Sonny Perkins, and certainly Joe Gelhardt, should serve as proof that it is easy to lose momentum as neither’s prospects look hugely promising at Leeds United currently.

Thomas, at 20, will need to make up for some lost time but a solid showing in his first senior action, after preseason involvement under Farke and excellent Under-21s form, could translate into something more substantial next term.

In other Leeds United news, the club will “never” be able to admit the truth if a mooted reason was to blame for Illan Meslier’s howler.
