Leeds United at ‘advanced’ stage in bid to hire new manager as Angus Kinnear speaks out

Angus Kinnear has revealed the search for a new head coach is “well advanced” as the board look to appoint Jesse Marsch’s successor at Leeds United.

Andoni Iraola, Carlos Corberan, Marcelo Gallardo and Arne Slot have all turned down the chance to move to Elland Road in recent days.

Despite the knockbacks, the Leeds chief has revealed in his programme notes that the search for a new manager is at an advanced stage.

“The search for a new head coach is well advanced,” wrote Kinnear (BBC Sport West Yorkshire, Adam Pope Twitter, 12 February).

Imminent

Hopefully, Kinnear’s comments mean an appointment is close. The hunt for a new manager has proven to be a thankless task to date and Victor Orta was perhaps anticipating an easier challenge.

This afternoon’s game against Manchester United will be overseen by Michael Skubala and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The under-21s coach showed he can put a competitive team out on the pitch and the draw at Old Trafford should certainly increase confidence levels.

An appointment simply has to be made early on in the new week. Next weekend could be huge in Leeds’ battle against Premier League relegation. The Whites travel to Everton, who are also engulfed firmly in the relegation dogfight.

Another point against United at Elland Road would certainly be well received and would mean Leeds travel to Merseyside in relatively good form. Let’s all hope a new manager will be heading west with the rest of the squad come Friday afternoon.
