Leeds United and Police set to review Elland Road ‘crush’ – report

Leeds United along with West Yorkshire Police are due to review an incident that took place during the Whites clash with Newcastle on Saturday (January 22).

A ‘crush’ took place as away supporters entered the stadium as four turnstiles, designated to let in 2,7000 fans, stopped working according to BBC Sport.

Thankfully there were no reported injuries, but fans were left ‘terrified’ as the police failed to respond to the incident that lasted more than 30 minutes.

Leeds released a statement acknowledging “complaints raised by some Newcastle supporters regarding issues experienced entering Elland Road on Saturday”.

The club “will now work with the Newcastle United Supporters’ Trust, West Yorkshire Police and our own safety team to review the issues raised, and ensure we continue to provide a safe environment for everyone attending our stadium,” as per BBC Sport.

Devastating

Thank god nobody got hurt.

The recent crush at AFCON killing at least eight people and injuring 38 more in conjunction with this incident really opens your eyes.

Nobody knows the full extent as to what happened to the turnstiles at Leeds but by the sounds of it this could have been avoided.

One witness reported that police failed to respond to the issue for more than 30 minutes which is absolutely disgusting.

Have the authorities not learnt from the countless similar incidents that have taken place at football games, with the Hillsborough tragedy springing to mind.

It is almost as if football fans are all tarred under the same brush and any sign of a commotion is automatically labelled as trouble.

Hopefully the authorities investigating this issue identify and solve the problem to prevent it from happening in the future.

It is imperative that if anybody is responsible for any form of gross misconduct of any form, they are held accountable.

Football matches need to be a safe, enjoyable environment for everyone.
