Leeds United and 49ers may face financial worries if Premier League promotion not secured
Danny Mills has suggested that Leeds United could struggle financially next season if they aren’t promoted to the Premier League via the Play-Offs.
The Whites welcome Norwich City to Elland Road on Thursday (16 April) knowing they must win to keep their promotion hopes alive.
After a positive season, Daniel Farke’s side finished third meaning if they want to play in the Premier League next season, they must earn it through the Play-Offs.
Speaking on talkSPORT (16 May), Mills believes that promotion is a must to help secure the financial security of the club.
He said: “The financial situation is a little bit unsure. There has always been speculation about how much the 49ers franchise have involved with the club. They’re linked to a lot of superstars but I don’t think that’s into Leeds directly, it’s into the 49ers fund.
“Obviously, when they got relegated they had to slash the wage bill very quickly and get loads of players out, so that’s precarious.
“Parachute payments will stop soon and that’s a problem. They need to be back in the Premier League.”
Leeds United need Premier League promotion
The Whites made plenty of changes over the summer with four players departing permanently while ten made loan moves away.
These departures were replaced by six permanent signings and an additional three loanees moving to Elland Road.
Connor Roberts also joined in January while eight further permanent and loan departures were made during the winter window.
It is safe to say that the turnover of talent at Leeds has been huge in the last 12 months which has made the work done by Farke even better.
The sales of key assets over the summer may be necessary if the Whites aren’t promoted to the Premier League through the play offs.
Someone like Crysencio Summerville could move in the summer transfer window regardless of the division.

Given that he has won the Championship Player of the Year, he could certainly command a large fee.
This sort of sales could certainly go some way to easing any financial concerns that the 49ers and Leeds United have.
