Leeds United: Ally McCoist shares ‘tremendous’ verdict amid promotion race at Elland Road
Ally McCoist has gushed over Leeds United in his latest prediction for the Championship promotion battle as he revealed he would love to see Daniel Farke’s side get promoted.
The former Rangers striker confessed he underestimated the league by thinking Leicester and Ipswich had already wrapped up the promotion battle before Leeds dragged themselves back into it.
McCoist continued by saying that he now expects Farke’s team to pip their competitors to an automatic promotion place given the momentum they have built up.
Speaking to Football League World [28 March], McCoist shared: “I’m going to tell you the gospel truth, two-and-a-half to three months ago I thought Leicester and Ipswich were away, I thought they were plain sailing, but that was me underestimating the league again.
“It’s been brilliant, they’ve [Leeds] clawed it back. Leeds’ performances at home have been brilliant, Ipswich went through a really sticky spell, but I think they’ve done remarkably well to rally again and have kicked on.
“I mentioned Leeds’ home form had been tremendous, but one of the best performances that I’ve seen in a long, long time was Southampton for about 65-70 minutes up at Anfield. They knocked the ball about really well.
“I think it’s very tough to call. I think the momentum is with Leeds, and I think that they’ll go up, and that would certainly excite me. They are a club that I love watching, and I love going to Elland Road.”
Ally McCoist shares Leeds United Championship promotion verdict
McCoist has become the latest pundit, alongside both Darren Bent and Ben Foster, to expect Leeds to reach the automatic promotion places come the end of the season, seeing off competition from any two of Leicester, Southampton and Ipswich.
Leicester defender Wout Faes, meanwhile, spoke out about the “crazy” promotion race but insisted the Foxes are still as determined as ever to win the league and the promotion to the Premier League that comes along with it.
Despite having moved into first place, Leeds know they still have a fight on their hands if they want to win automatic promotion from the Championship, or perhaps even the title, given the standard set by their competition.

Going into the final stretch of the season after the international break, all four of the top teams will know they stand a chance of making the automatic promotion, and two will have to enter the uncertainty of the playoffs.
