Leeds United: Ally McCoist raises Leicester v Southampton question live on talkSPORT

Ally McCoist has questioned whether Leeds United and Ipswich would prefer Southampton to beat Leicester in the clash at the King Power on 23 April.

Leeds’ 4-3 win against Middlesbrough at the Riverside saw them move back above Ipswich to second in the table, one point away from Leicester and six ahead of Southampton.

A win for the Saints would see them make up ground to apply pressure from behind while making the title more achievable, whereas the reverse would see less pressure on Leeds but put the title almost out of reach.

Speaking live on talkSPORT [23 April, 06:14], McCoist said: “Ipswich are now a point behind Leeds who are a point behind Leicester.

“It looks like Southampton will be more than capable of winning at Leicester but those three points dropped at Cardiff.

“Here’s an interesting question for Leeds and Ipswich, I wonder what they want tonight. I wonder if Leeds and Ipswich would want Southampton to win tonight or would they actually want Southampton out of the equation and just accept it’s a battle between the two of them?”

Leeds United promotion bid continues v Middlesbrough

Having moved to within a point of the top spot, albeit with one more game played than their rivals, Leeds will surely be hoping Leicester are the one to slip up at the King Power regardless of the possibility of pressure from Southampton.

The Saints’ recent form, aside from a shock defeat against Cardiff, had fired them back in with a shout at reaching automatic promotion, but their defeat against the Bluebirds while Leeds beat Boro seemingly knocked them out of contention.

Even with a win against Leicester, they would remain three points behind Daniel Farke’s side with just two games to go with a worse goal difference and, given Leeds’ form, it would be a tough ask for them to leapfrog the Whites.

If Leicester win, meanwhile, they will go four points ahead with two games to go and all but wrap up the title, leaving just the second automatic promotion place for Leeds and Ipswich to fight for, ramping up the tension yet again.
