Leeds United: Ally McCoist and Jeff Stelling share ‘fantastic’ promotion verdict live on talkSPORT

Ally McCoist has insisted you’d have to be a brave man to pick which two of the current top three will achieve automatic promotion after Leicester, Ipswich and Leeds United all won.

The former Rangers man suggested the entire picture of the top three could change again next week as he gushed over the drama of the promotion race.

Jeff Stelling, meanwhile, questioned how all three teams managed to win given the stress involved particularly in the games with Leeds and Ipswich, both sides winning it late on.

Speaking live on talkSPORT [06:11], Stelling shared: “The top three are still separated by just two points after they all won – goodness knows how they all won. Leeds kept pace with two late goals from Summerville and James to beat Hull 3-1.”

McCoist then followed: “Fantastic, they scored late on as well. We’re talking about the top three in Arsenal, City and Liverpool but it’s the same in the Championship. The drama.

“Leeds United left it late, you’d be a brave man to pick the two [automatic promotion teams]. It could all change next week.”

Jeff Stelling & Ally McCoist share Championship promotion claim

After dropping into second place, Leeds know they still have a fight on their hands if they want to win automatic promotion from the Championship, or perhaps even the title, given the standard set by their competition.

Ahead of the games on 1 April, Stelling insisted he was amazed by Ipswich and their challenge for promotion given the strength of Leeds, Leicester and Southampton, hinting that they could be his choice to go up.

With just six games left to play, we are still no closer to knowing the outcome of the title and promotion races, with Leicester, Leeds and Ipswich all having occupied the top spot at different stages in the last two weeks.

After all three sides won again, the pace they have set has been incredible at the top, and whichever one of the three teams drops out of the automatic promotion places and into the playoffs can consider themselves extremely unlucky.
