Leeds United had agreed a deal with Manchester City over the loan signing of Kalvin Phillips, which has now collapsed, according to TEAMtalk.

The online source reported [30 May] that Leeds had a loan agreement in principle with the Premier League champions, which relied on the club securing promotion to the top tier.

Having lost 1-0 to Southampton in the Championship play-off final, the Whites no longer have a deal to sign their former star on loan ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

Leeds United miss chance to sign Kalvin Phillips on loan

Phillips has really struggled to progress his career since leaving Elland Road in the summer of 2022, with the midfielder unable to break into Pep Guardiola's starting XI before being sent to West Ham United on loan.

He also failed to make the desired impact at the London Stadium during his six-month spell, even despite David Moyes advocating for him, making just 10 appearances in all competitions.

Despite this, the 28-year-old would have been a very welcomed figure back at Elland Road should the deal between Leeds and Man City have gone through this summer.

Without promotion back to the Premier League, the Whites are in a very sticky situation in terms of finance, and a Phillips return will be the least of the club's worries.

Of course, with Red Bull's new investment, concerns will be eased around potential punishments ahead of next season, though many players are still likely to exit Elland Road this summer.

Stars such as Crysencio Summerville, Georginio Rutter, Archie Gray and Wilfried Gnonto have all been linked with moves away in order to raise funds to balance the books.

Leeds will need to prepare for a summer packed with change, though it is unlikely the fans will be reunited with a familiar face in Phillips.
