Leeds United ace Mateo Joseph to win Olympics call-up after permission granted by IOC
Leeds United star Mateo Joseph has been cleared to be called up for the Spanish squad for this summer’s Olympic Games in Paris, according to MailOnline.
In an article shared on 13 June, it had been confirmed that the 20-year-old had been granted permission to play for Spain – who took silver last time out in Tokyo – alongside former Netherlands youth international Dean Huijsen of Juventus.
The forward has background in both England and Spain, representing the Three Lions at Under-20 level, but has this year played and scored for the Spanish U21 side.
The duo had to wait for clearance from the International Olympic Committee [IOC] following their eligibility already being recognised by FIFA.
Mateo Joseph continues Leeds United progress
Many following Leeds United will be pleased for Joseph, despite the fact that the Olympics will potentially carve into the start of the Premier League season.
The attacker made 26 appearances and scored three goals for the Whites this season in a year of progress, with Daniel Farke set to allow him room for further development next term.
Spanish supporters will be glad the fluent youngster has seemingly opted to play for his mother’s nation, with an Olympic representation giving a huge hint to whom he will don the colours for in his fledgling international career.

Once back from Paris – hopefully from his perspective having gone one better and donning a gold medal round his neck – Joseph will be pushing for more game time in the Championship and will return to Thorp Arch as a welcome boost to Farke’s more settled squad.
