Leeds United ace Dan James expected to leave on deadline day, Tottenham unlikely
Dan James is expected to leave Leeds United before the transfer window closes at 11pm today (1 September), according to the Evening Standard.
The Welsh international has been a target for Antonio Conte and Fabio Paratici for some time but Spurs have not made any meaningful progress on a deal which has now seen Fulham and Everton surge into the fold.
The 24-year-old has started games for Jesse Marsch’s side this season and already picked up an assist in the Whites’ first five Premier League games.
But interest in the Welshman has been constant and his Elland Road exit now seems likely to happen before the deadline strikes although the destination is not yet confirmed.
Leeds United have been much more open to selling James than they were with Jack Harrison who was a persistent target for Newcastle United throughout the summer.
Unless it’s James who is actively trying to leave the club, then the decision to get rid of him at such a late moment in the window is truly baffling.
His electrifying pace is something that would frighten any defender and Marschhas been able to utilise that off the bench when the tiring full-back starts to lose his energy.
That is a weapon that can be extremely effective and Leeds are about to throw it away entirely with next to no time available to bring in a replacement.
Cody Gakpo could have been that but he is now staying with PSV Eindhoven until at least after the World Cup which has massively scuppered Victor Orta’s grand plan.
He was even in Eindhoven to get the deal done but he has to return to Yorkshire with egg all over his face and he must not allow Jams to leave to avoid even more embarrassment this late in the window.
In other Leeds United news, Liverpool have hijacked Orta’s attempts to make a last-minute signing with a medical at Anfield now scheduled.
