Leeds United ace Brenden Aaronson not expected to start for USA vs Wales at Qatar World Cup 2022

Journalist Tom Bogert expects the USA to lineup against Wales on Monday (21 November) night without Leeds ace Brenden Aaronson.

The USMNT open their 2022 Qatar World Cup campaign against the Welsh but there are injury doubts surrounding defender Sergino Dest and midfielder Weston McKennie.

Despite that though, Aaronson is expected to start on the bench with the journalist predicting on his personal Twitter account (20 November) for both of the injury doubts to get the nod from the start.

“USMNT open their World Cup campaign tomorrow against Wales,” he wrote.

“Hoping to see this starting XI, though there are some injury/fitness concerns. If Dest can’t start, then Yedlin. If McKennie can’t start, then Aaronson. Reyna off the bench early, pending game state.”

It just so happens that where Aaronson is at his best on a football pitch, is where America have got stacks and stacks of options.

Along with McKennie, the likes of Timothy Weah, Christian Pulisic, Yunus Musah and Giovanni Reyna are all available and it means that Aaronson has to really battle for his place in the side.

His form for Leeds this season started really brightly but in recent weeks and months he has struggled to really make an impact, despite being among Jesse Marsch’s favourites.

It’s not really a surprise that he isn’t going to start the game, especially if the players who have been a doubt are available, but should he get the nod then he will be well equipped against a set of defenders who play in England.

His pace and directness could be a big hand off the bench should he start, and he’ll be looking to shine on the grandest stage and get his season back on track before returning to Elland Road for the second half of the campaign.
