Leeds United accept Ian Poveda transfer on Deadline Day but ‘issues’ emerge amid Birmingham City vs Sheffield Wednesday fight
Leeds United will allow Ian Poveda to leave on a permanent transfer on Deadline Day amid rival pursuits from Sheffield Wednesday and Birmingham City, according to Phil Hay.
The Athletic journalist reported via Twitter on 1 February that the 23-year-old was the “most likely” to leave Elland Road before the window shuts, and it is now his choice where to go.
He added via the outlet’s website that the winger was “set to leave permanently… this evening” as the two Championship rivals look to sign him.
However, The Star report that “issues” at St. Andrew’s are complicating their pursuit of the player whose contract is set to expire in the summer, so Wednesday may be in the box seat.
Surplus to requirements
After spending the past two seasons on loan at Blackburn Rovers and Blackpool it was somewhat surprising that Poveda emerged as an option for Daniel Farke again this season.
He has made 10 appearances in all competitions but only two have been starts, and since the upheaval of the final weeks of the summer window passed his opportunities have dipped significantly.
With Crysencio Summerville and Dan James showing such strong form, and high-quality back-ups available in Willy Gnonto and Jaidon Anthony, there is very little chance for the Colombia international to force his way into the side.
If Leeds United can get some money now rather than lose him for free in the summer then it makes sense to accept a permanent exit, even if Farke has said he doesn’t want to weaken his squad.

It sounds like a Hillsborough move could be more likely if there are problems at Birmingham, but whatever his next destination is going to be it will need to be sorted fast with the hours counting down to the deadline.
In other Leeds United news, another permanent departure from Elland Road is now on the cards even after the window shuts.
